Virus Mitigation in K-12 Schools: A Game Plan for Lasting IAQ Improvements
This is an archived recording of the 2021 online version of the course. The course materials and continuing education credits and/or professional development hours are not available. The ASHRAE Learning Institute developed this course to discuss how leadership for schools, specifically K-12 spaces, are to fiscally implement the facility improvement measures to improve their HVAC systems’ ability to mitigate virus transmission. The pandemic has exposed existing vulnerabilities in the design, construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of systems installed in many schools. These systems need to be analyzed for potential improvements. The ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force has practical guidance for how to evaluate the HVAC systems for the different measures that may or may not apply to their systems. This course will discuss those options for typical systems found in schools, the method to evaluate and the fiscally responsible approach of what should be implemented. A case study will be presented that showcases the process to evaluate its systems, the improvements implemented, and how those are being evaluated for its ability to reduce the risk of infection. Components to evaluate for current or future designs will also be addressed.
This course provides verbal guidance to the written materials posted on the ASHRAE COVID-19 website for evaluating buildings for virus transmission. It shows the application of that guidance for different systems typically found in schools. The course reiterates the fact that there are different mitigation strategies and fiscal impacts that must help your building, and its systems specific arrangement and needs.
